We Strive for Literacy · Vista Literacy Collaborative

AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunities

Give a year. Change a community. Serve alongside a team fighting illiteracy and poverty — and help build the programs that put reading within reach for every student.

About the Project

A year of service that builds lasting capacity.

The Vista Literacy Collaborative brings AmeriCorps VISTA members to We Strive for Literacy to do work that lasts long after the year ends. VISTA — Volunteers in Service to America — is the national service program dedicated to fighting poverty at its root.

Rather than tutoring one student at a time, VISTA members build the systems that let us reach thousands: new programs, stronger partnerships, and the volunteer and funding pipelines that keep literacy work going. You won’t just serve. You’ll build something that stays.

What You’ll Do

Capacity-building work with real reach.

Every VISTA role is different, but the mission is shared. Here’s the kind of work you’ll take on across your service year.

Community Outreach

Connect with families, schools, and neighborhood leaders to bring literacy services to the students who need them most.

Program Development

Design and pilot new tutoring models, curricula, and workflows that make our programs more effective and easier to scale.

Volunteer Recruitment

Build and grow the tutor pipeline — recruiting, onboarding, and supporting the volunteers who power our reading programs.

Resource Building

Create toolkits, guides, and shared materials that our staff and volunteers can use for years to come.

Grant Research

Identify funding opportunities and help draft proposals that keep literacy programs sustainable and growing.

Partnership Development

Forge relationships with schools, libraries, and local organizations that expand our reach across the community.

Benefits & Compensation

Service comes with real support.

A VISTA year is a full-time commitment — and AmeriCorps backs you with a benefits package built to help you focus on the mission.

  • Living allowance throughout your year of service.
  • Education award or cash stipend at the end of service.
  • Health coverage to keep you supported.
  • Professional development and training opportunities.
  • Student loan forbearance during your term.
  • Childcare assistance for those who qualify.
  • Relocation allowance to help you get started.
  • The pride of real impact — work that outlasts your year.

Who We’re Looking For

Maybe that’s you.

No single path leads to VISTA. What our members share is heart, drive, and a belief that reading opens doors. If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

  • Passionate about literacy and education — you believe reading changes lives.
  • A college graduate or equivalent experience — degrees welcome, lived experience valued.
  • A strong communicator — comfortable with people, partners, and the written word.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative — you take initiative and lift up the team.
  • Committed to community service — ready to give a full year to something bigger.

Closing the Literacy Gap One Child at a Time

Across the country, millions of children are falling behind in reading—and the consequences can last a lifetime.
